THE BOOTS

By the back door, his boots.
The mud of the last day
dried gray in the treads.

My mother sweeps the kitchen,
sweeps the whole floor flat,
and leaves a square around them.

In April the garden will need turning.
I lift them by the laces —
still tied, the loops still tight,
the knot a man makes
when he means to come back soon.
