What we carry

Walk the shelves

Every jar, tin, and bottle earns its place. We favor botanicals with a long history of use, blended and packaged in small batches with an old-apothecary respect for the plants themselves.

Dried Herbs & Botanicals

Loose herbs, flowers, roots, and barks by the ounce — the working pantry of the home herbalist, kept fresh and clearly labeled.

Tinctures & Extracts

Slow-steeped, dropper-bottled preparations made with patience — because good extraction can't be hurried.

Tea Blends

House-blended loose leaf teas and tisanes — bright, earthy, and calming cups composed for New England seasons.

Salves & Skin Care

Botanical balms, body oils, and simple soaps made with recognizable ingredients you could read aloud without stumbling.

Candles & Home Goods

Hand-poured candles, incense, and hearth goods that smell like a walk through pine woods to the tide line.

Books & Curiosities

Field guides, herbals, seed packets, and small gifts for the plant-curious — the kind of finds that make browsing a ritual.

Our craft

The apothecary way

An apothecary isn't a store so much as a practice. Here's how we keep the old craft honest.

01

Source with care

We look for growers and gatherers we'd be proud to name — favoring organic, ethically harvested botanicals whenever we can get them.

02

Blend in small batches

Teas, salves, and blends are made in quantities small enough to stay fresh — and to keep the human hand in every jar.

03

Share what we know

Ask us anything. We'd rather send you home with the right herb and a good explanation than a full bag and a shrug.

Our story

An old craft, kept alive on the seacoast

Before pharmacies had fluorescent lights, every town had an apothecary — a place of dark wood shelves, labeled jars, and someone behind the counter who actually knew the plants. Southern Maine Apothecary keeps that tradition working in Kittery.

We're a specialty shop, not a supplement warehouse. That means fewer products, chosen deliberately; blends made in-house; and honest conversation about what herbs can and can't do.

"Take the time to know the plant, and the plant returns the favor."

Whether you're a practicing herbalist restocking your cabinet or a curious visitor who wandered up from the harbor, you'll be met the same way: unhurried, and glad you came in.

Maine's oldest town is a fine place to slow down — and slowing down is rather the point of an apothecary. Come browse the shelves, smell the blends, and ask your questions.
