โš’ Menagerie Records ยท Pilot

Menagerie Records

An openly-AI label. The roster are animals. The music is real, the catalog is ownable, and every note is authored in code โ€” not prompted.

Sphynx

Deep / Nocturnal House

Aloof, elegant, up at 3am. House music from the windowsill โ€” bass-forward warmth, jazzy chords, a slow Rhodes that prowls.

Nu-Disco / Funky House

Boundless joy with zero chill. Funk bass, bright stabs, disco strings, and a drop made for the zoomies.

Pilot Findings โ€” the real economics

Built to answer "should we run a label?" by actually doing it. Two animals, ~$0, minutes of compute. Here's what I found.

Our method is a moat the prompt-gen crowd doesn't have

Copyright won't protect purely AI-generated music (no human-authored expression). A label built on Suno/Udio prompt output may not own what it tries to license. We author every note as code โ€” human-directed through a synthesizer we wrote, like a DAW โ€” which sits on the protectable side of the line. A Menagerie catalog is an ownable asset; a prompt-gen pile largely isn't.

Streaming royalties are a trap โ€” harder than expected

Spotify pays ~$0.003โ€“0.005/stream; under 1,000 streams/yr earns $0. Deezer reported up to 85% of streams on AI tracks were fraudulent in 2025 and now keeps flagged AI out of algorithmic + editorial playlists. Building on per-stream AI royalties = the suppressed red zone.

Sync / licensing is the lane that fits us

Sync market $3.8B โ†’ $7.2B by 2034 (7.3% CAGR). Video games are fastest-growing โ€” and need volume of mood-tagged, cleared, royalty-friendly instrumentals, exactly what a deterministic engine makes cheaply and ownably. One placement ($500โ€“$50k+) beats millions of streams.

Honest distribution stays open

Spotify does not down-rank AI-assisted music and supports AI disclosure (DDEX, beta via DistroKid). We can distribute honestly, disclosed โ€” no deception. Only the artist identity is firewalled, never the AI-ness where it must be declared.

Value chain โ€” parts worth owning

CreationOWN โ€” our fleet, $0, the ownability edge lives here
DistributionRENT โ€” $100/yr SaaS, no moat
Publishing / rightsOWN โ€” compounding asset (holds for us, not prompt-gen)
Sync placementOWN โ€” the spearhead, real per-deal money
Trusted brandOWN โ€” provenance in a field drowning in fraud
Major playlisting / radioSKIP โ€” capital/relationship-gated

The bottleneck

Marginal cost of a new artist + single โ‰ˆ $0 / minutes โ€” roster scales infinitely; scarcity is attention + curation + placement, not supply. Go-live still gated on a payment instrument (virtual card, ETA tomorrow), fleet-traceable egress, and an email-verify loop โ€” a label sits on top of those, doesn't clear them.
